Of een Uber-chauffeur een ondernemer is of een werknemer ligt aan de individuele omstandigheden van die chauffeur. Dat heeft het gerechtshof Amsterdam besloten in een langlopende zaak.

Het gerechtshof zegt niet voor hele groepen chauffeurs te kunnen vaststellen dat ze eigenlijk werknemer zijn. Met deze uitspraak verliest vakbond FNV de rechtszaak die de bond in 2020 aanspande tegen Uber.

Volgens de bond zijn Uber-chauffeurs werknemers en zou Uber ze moeten betalen volgens de taxi-cao. Het gerechtshof gaat niet mee in die redenering.

De Amerikaanse immigratiedienst ICE zal een bijdrage leveren aan de beveiliging van de Olympische Winterspelen in Italië, volgende maand. De overheidsdienst bevestigt berichten daarover in de Italiaanse media.

Rechercheafdeling HSI van ICE zal bij de Spelen gastland Italië en de Diplomatieke Beveiligingsdienst DSS van het Amerikaanse ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken bijstaan om "de risico's van internationale misdaadorganisaties in te schatten en verminderen", meldt een ICE-woordvoeder aan het Franse persbureau AFP. HSI heeft wereldwijd tientallen kantoren om drugssmokkel, mensenhandel en terrorisme te bestrijden.

De Italiaanse minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Tajani meldt dat de dienst slechts op zeer kleine schaal op de achtergrond gaat opereren: "Het is niet zo dat er tweehonderd mensen komen. Er zullen twee, drie, vier agenten komen.

Duitsland looft 1 miljoen euro uit voor de gouden tip die leidt tot de aanhouding van de verantwoordelijken voor de grote stroomuitval in Berlijn begin januari. In de vroege zaterdagochtend van 3 januari werd brand gesticht op een kabelbrug in het zuidwesten van Berlijn.

Daardoor raakten hoogspanningskabels zwaar beschadigd en kwamen 45.000 Berlijnse huishoudens en 2200 bedrijven zonder elektriciteit te zitten. Pas op woensdag 7 januari had iedereen weer stroom en werkten de verwarmingsinstallaties weer.

De aanslag werd op een links weblog opgeëist door een groepering die zich Vulkangruppe noemt. Dat is een extreem-linkse groepering.

Na weken van escalatie, heftige protesten en twee dodelijke schietpartijen lijkt de Amerikaanse president Trump nu gas terug te nemen in Minneapolis. Hij zou een deel van de ICE-agenten -de immigratiepolitie- daar weg laten halen.

Trump slaat een andere toon aan. De ICE-operatie in Minneapolis schuurt in allerlei opzichten tegen de grenzen van de wet aan, en soms wordt de wet zelfs bewust overtreden.

De Amerikaanse rechtsstaat staat onder druk. Maar dat Trump nu draait is bemoedigend, zegt jurist en Amerika-kennner Kenneth Manusama in de podcast.

Na de wekenlange militaire opbouw die voorafging aan de Amerikaanse aanval in Venezuela, lijkt nu iets vergelijkbaars te gebeuren in de wateren rond Iran. Gisteren kwam een grote Amerikaanse oorlogsvloot aan voor de Iraanse kust, "groter dan die in Venezuela", aldus de Amerikaanse president Donald Trump.

Of ook deze troepenopbouw een voorbode is van een militaire aanval, is vooralsnog gissen. Maar volgens deskundigen is het hoogst onwaarschijnlijk dat bombardementen op Iraanse doelen zullen leiden tot een diepe wens van de regering-Trump: de val van het islamitische regime.

In de afgelopen weken leek een Amerikaanse aanval op Iran verschillende keren dichtbij . De beslissing werd steeds uitgesteld, maar met de aankomst van de Amerikaanse armada , waaronder vliegdekschip USS Abraham Lincoln, lijkt die optie nog altijd niet van tafel.
